In Ireland this name is used on men and women - just type it into Google and you'll find male and female examples of bearers. However, in modern times, Ailbhe is used more on girls than boys, because it looks/sounds more like a female name nowadays. You'd be more likely to find an older man called Ailbhe than a teenage boy.

I can't believe no one else has caught this! The history of the name says "In Irish legend she was a warrior of the Fianna." SHE! Then why is is M and F? Does anyone know? Other than that, this is a pretty name--only for a girl, though.
Umm. Maybe it's listed as M and F because it is used for both men and women? Because it is. The English variants are Elva (more commonly used on girls) and Alva (more commonly used on boys, i.e. Thomas Alva Edison).
