Meaning & History
Meaning uncertain. One source derives the name from the Greek verb ἀΐσσω (aisso) meaning "to run, to dart, to shoot", whilst another source connects the name to the Greek adjective αἰακτός (aiaktos) meaning "lamentable, wailing, miserable". The latter word is ultimately derived from the Greek verb αἰάζω (aiazo) meaning "to cry, to (be)wail".
