Roman
cognomen derived from the place name
Africa, which in Roman times referred only to North Africa. This was the
agnomen of the 3rd-century BC Roman general Scipio Africanus, who was honoured with it after his victory over Carthage in the Second Punic War. His descendants used it as a cognomen.
