Meaning & History
Means "swift as a whirlwind", literally "whirlwood-footed", from Greek ἄελλα (aella) meaning "a stormy wind, whirlwind" and πούς (pous) "foot". This was an epithet of the Greek goddess Iris, the swift messenger of the gods. According to later sources this name belonged to one of the Harpies. (Compare also Aello, Aella.)
