Meaning & History
Latinized form of Greek Ἀκάδημος (Akademos), which apparently meant "of a silent district". This was the name of a legendary Athenian hero of the Trojan War tales, whose estate (six stadia from Athens) was the enclosure where Plato taught his school. He called the school Akademeia meaning "grove of Akademos", which is known as the Academy in English.
