From the Hebrew name
אֶבְיָתָר (ʾEvyaṯar) meaning
"my father abounds" or
"my father excels", derived from
אָב (ʾav) meaning "father" and
יָתַר (yaṯar) meaning "to abound, to excel". According to the
Old Testament Abiathar was a high priest during the reign of King
David.
