Only a month after her marriage ot Thomas, only three months after taking the throne, Arianna's usually-robust health began to fade. She became very ill. Rumors abounded that it was the same illness that had taken her aunt and cousins and that the new empress was on her death bed. But it wasn't; it was pneumonia, worsened by exhaustion from her near-constant public campaigns. She has been trying to cultivate public approval, and it took its toll on her. After nearly a month of rest and treatment, she was back on her feet, although she had to scale things back.
Only a few months later Arianna began vomiting. Her stomach was so tumultuous that she threw up almost every meal. She also began getting headaches and feeling tired all the time. At first everyoen was worried she was relapsing, but it turned out she was pregnant! Arianna was not at all excited at first--in fact, she was horrified. She was just beginning to learn to rule, only just married, and not at all prepared for motherhood. But after a few weeks, after getting used to the idea, she began to imagine having her own child, mothering it and loving it, she began to look forward to the birth. The entire empire was happy, relieved to have an heir to the throne. But the pregnancy was difficult; Arianna was tired all the time and her morning sickness lasted for months. Toward the end the doctors confined her to bed. The empress was delivered of a fine girl, Crown Princess Rosalia, called Rose by her family and nurses. But it weakened her as well. She confined to bed for three weeks, but she didn't mind, as she spent the time taking care of her daughter and spendign time with Thomas. Thomas, worried all throught Arianna's illness and pregnancy, is enamored of his daughter and so happy to have his beloved empress well again.
