One orbit has completed since the death of my father and a great King. The plague swept across our lands killing many, but there are none I grieve for more than my dear father, and my sweet sister Angelique. I find comfort in the thought that they may find comfort in each other's prescence in the afterlife. Angelique held a special place in Father's heart from the day of her birth, she was so fair and had such a good nature. She truly would have become a sight to behold in time, and would no doubt have been the darling of our kingdom.
I find myself having to take his place as ruler of Caranenth, but at a loss to best rule my people when I am barely a man myself. I was raised for this responsibility and my loyalty will always be to my people above myself, but I can not help but mourn the loss of my childhood so prematurely. All I can hope for is a time of peace while I continue my lessons with my co-regents so that I may be prepared for the time when trials will come, as they no doubt will. I prey that these may be far into the future as failing my title, my family, and my people would be a fate worse than death.
One of the first tasks I must take upon myself as King is to raise the moral of my people. There has been so much death, and the people are hurting. I plan to arrange a day of mourning to commemmerate the passed, and a festival to follow this to celebrate their lives, and the lives of those who survived.
My Mother has become my strongest support, but I have heard her quarrel with Benoit, the second co-regent alongside herself. Benoit feels that I am still too much of a boy, and must mature immediately to be worthy of my birthright, whereas Mother is doing her best to protect me as only a Mother can. I know she mourns my lost childhood almost as much as I, and my longing glances whilst my siblings play in the grounds has not escaped her notice. Benoit was my Father's cousin, as well as his most trusted friend, but I find myself very wary of him since my coronation. However, there is truth in his views, and I must just accept this new life that has been thrust upon my shoulders so much sooner than any had anticipated.
One thing Mother and Benoit do agree on is that I have to be married. Beside my dear sisters, I've not had much association with females, though I am aware that I have been betrothed to the Infanta Isabella from a neighbouring kingdom since her birth. Our marriage will bring a strong alliance between our kingdom's and, whilst I have never actually met the Infanta, Mother tells me she is an enchanting girl.
I must part as I find myself in the rare circumstance of having no commitments this afternoon. I plan to find Concordia, Christophe, Baptiste and Edmond, and spend some time with them. If I have learnt anything in these past months it is that we can not predict tomorrow, so I've been sharing a lot of what I have learnt with my siblings, in hope that, should I pass, they will be better prepared for this responsibility than I, especially Christophe as he is now next in line...
In life and in death,
Laurent.
