Written from Mordecai's perspectiveThe plague is nearly gone completely. I have appointed a new General. Lord Ellar's second son, Elric, will take the place of General Andor. He has been a good friend of the late General Andor and I know Andor thought him the ways of battle too. He has had plenty of experience in leading men into battle and has been on the war council for several years. I am sure that General Elric will do very well. I feel tired all the time. I usually don't sleep much, but now it is starting to cause me fatigue and headaches. My Sally says I should confer with our Healer and maybe get a potion to ease the headaches. She says little Sally also complained of headaches and doesn't want to eat anymore. I am worried about her. After losing my third son, I cannot afford to loose another child, and I don't think my Sally would take it too well either. I have been to the Healer. He says I have the plague. He looked at Little Sally as well, and says she has it too. I cannot believe it, the plague was finally dying down and now I am ill. I have ordered for me and my daughter to be separated from the rest of the family. Mostly Sally is looking after us together with our Healer. The Healer says that it is very unlikely for plague survivors to get the disease again, so she should be safe. I'd rather have that she wouldn't take any chances, but I don't have the strength to argue with her. My little girl is dead. Sally is very upset, but I am surprised to see she is staying strong. She has taken the news like a Queen and only cried when she was telling me. I am not getting any better either. I think it's time to make arrangements for when I die.I have told Sally what she needs to do at my death. She and Councilor Halvar will need to rule the Kingdom until Solon comes of age. General Elric will lead our army and the fleet we are building will be overseen by Admiral Costin. I have told Salacia to find a match for Solon. I think a daughter of either Lord Crescent of Terra Legato or a daughter of Lord Mimosa of Terra Solandra would be best.I am very weary. My body aches and I feel ashamed that I am dying in my bed and not with a sword in my hand like my Father and brothers did. I cannot hold on much longer. Sally is getting a new cloth with lemon water to dapple the sweat of my brow. I would very much like to see her face again. My sweet Sally. I can hear her footsteps. I have to fight to keep breathing. Please hurry Sally. Another footstep. Another breath. Hurry my sweet, I cannot do this much longer. Another breath. I am so tired. The pain is getting worse. I can hear the door and look up. I have just enough strength left to smile at her once more. Goodbye my sweet Sally. Goodbye my love. *****
I am nearly running with the bowl in my hands. I am dimly aware of the scent of lemon coming from the bowl. As I was walking to fetch a new cloth and fresh water I suddenly got the feeling that I should return immediately. I know I will lose him today. After what seems like an eternity I finally reach his door. It is very heavy to push open and the hinges make a horrible sound. I look up at Mord and I can see he is awake and looking at me. He looks so tired and thin. He is a shadow of the man he used to be. He smiles at me. I smile back. I can see the strain on his face. He closes his eyes and he's gone. I walk up to him and wash his face with the lemon water. He loved the smell of lemons. I am proud of my son. Nine years old and here he stands. A crown upon his little head and he looks a lot older than he did two days ago. As Mord requested I had him crowned immediately. Councilor Halvar is now away to secure a match for Solon. I had told the Councilor Mord wanted him to marry either a daughter of Lord Crescent or Lord Mimosa. The Councilor said he would confer with Lord Mimosa first. He had less lands, but more wealth and a stronger army and fleet than Lord Crescent. At breakfast the table seems so big and empty. I am there with my three surviving children. Little Mord, who looked so big next to little Sally, suddenly looks small again. My Bella is nearly a woman, and the events have seemed to make her even older. I will need to find a match for her soon. Solon with his nine years looks older than his sister. He is very strong, just like Mord was. Last night when we were alone he told me he understood that he needed to get engaged. He declared that we were in need of a strong ally and when he was ready he would need to have an heir, because his little brother alone was not enough. He sounded so much like his Father that I had to smile. Mord raised him well. Councilor Halvar returned with good news. Lord Mimosa has agreed to the match and Solon will marry his eldest daughter Maiara. I have met the girl once and she seemed a lovely pretty lady. I am sure Solon will be pleased. Lord Mimosa will be of great value to us, when the enemies from overseas should return. The betrothal will be soon. I hope it will will give our people hope again, because there hasn't been much hope of late. They are very worried the plague may flare up again and fear the invaders from overseas. There isn't much food either and since the road traffic had been forbidden they are in short supply of anything that isn't made in the village or city they live in. Solon is now officially betrothed. Maiara looked very pretty at the ceremony and she seems to be getting along with Solon. I am glad Solon doesn't dislike the girl. Their love for each other will grow in the future, just like it did for me and Mord. The Council had agreed to open up the roads completely again, and discussed this with me, but not with Solon present. I told Councilor Halvar that he should discuss any decision with Solon and Solon will need to approve. He told me that he didn't think it wise to let a nine year old make big decisions like this, but I insisted. I do not want them to think that they can rule without a King. Solon will need them to take him seriously now, if they are to take him seriously when he comes of age. Besides, he is very clever and can handle more decisions than they think. Solon told me he wouldn't mind if the Council made his decisions, but I explained to him that it was necessary for him to be able to rule in the future. He saw the wisdom of that.At night I return to my bedchamber and sleep in a bed that is too big for me alone. What I wouldn't do to feel his arm around me and hear him whisper "Goodnight, my Sally".
