Larkin married his girlfriend, Natalia, and for a couple years, life was good and they were happy. Larkin worked as a store clerk. And then, Larkin’s friend Evaristo insulted Natalia in front of all the other clerks. Maybe he was joking. Maybe he didn't like Natalia. Larkin was furious. They got into a huge fight and Evaristo demanded a duel. Larkin rashly agreed. Soon, he realized how stupid he had been to risk his life, but Natalia’s honor was at stake, so he didn't back out. Natalia didn't know anything about the duel until Larkin’s second showed up at her door, informing her he had lost the duel and his life. Natalia didn't stop crying for a week.
A month later, she realized she was pregnant. She's been working as a laundry person ever since Antonio was born. Antonio is good company, considering, but she's still lonely.
Noelle and Matthais’s son Marius died after being trampled by a horse and carriage. Noelle was devastated. Matthais took some comfort in knowing Marius was still alive in the third movement of Noelle’s symphony and told her that, but she didn't want any of it; she wanted real Marius. Matthais tried to keep his head up, but Noelle sulked. (Isabelle was born sometime in the middle of the sulking- the hormones probably didn't help.)
Molly and Leo have another son, and Gideon and Beatrix had two sons and a daughter who died a few hours after being born. Anna has married Magnus. Ariane and Sam had two sons. Becky and Gilead weren't planning on any more kids, but Edmund arrived anyway, and they love him to pieces. Rachel and Emerens welcomed a son and a daughter. Joy married the blacksmith and they have a son and two daughters, one of whom sadly died.
It was bad enough for Kaleb when Ida and Sybil died, but then Wilhelmus fell out of a tree, breaking his neck and dying instantly. He couldn't take it.
He started making frequent trips to the tavern whenever he wasn't working. Margaret hid whenever he was home. And then one day he met Renata. She was beautiful. He loved her at first sight and he had an instant crush on her. He started courting her. Then, he got her pregnant. She was terrified and begged him to marry her. He agreed. He stopped drinking while she was pregnant, and Margaret was delighted. And then Henny was born, and something about her reminded her of his daughter who lived when his wife and son died. He started drinking again.
Renata is enduring his rages, but just barely.
