It could mean something similar to death counsel or evil counsel.

According to this site: http://www.mybaby-name.com/baby-name-full-detail/mordred/9014/1, it is Latin and means pain. I'm skeptical.
But according to three other baby name sites, it just means "son or nephew of Arthur," probably implying that it was made up. So that's not useful...

Most of baby name sites confuse meaning, which has to do with etymology, and characters with that name and when the meaning is unknown (or they don't know it), they put the character in the place of the meaning.
Mordred was a son or a nephew of Arthur, depending on the versions of the Arthurian legend, but obviously that is not the meaning, because any part of the name means "son", "nephew" or "Arthur" in any language.
On the other hand, I don't know any Latin word meaning pain (the main is doleo) that can be the etym of Mordred.

Are you sure?
I don't have my namebooks with me, so I can't look it up. But to me it seems that Mordred is made up of two elements, and my educated guess would be that the -red part means "counsel, advice". I don't know about the first part though, but "brave" seems a little unlikely to me. Sorry if I'm wrong though, like I said, I can't check atm.
