Does anyone out there know why Greeks use the short name Tom or Tommy for Athanasios? The only link I can see is the theta sound of the TH (as in thing, think, thorough)of *TH*omas and A*TH*anasios in Greek.

Hi Tom,
greeks do not use Tom or Tommy for Athanasios.
They use "Thanasis" or "Thanos" or "Nasos", but after all anybody can use any nickname he wants.
