Link between Tom (Tommy) and Athanasios (Thanasi)

Does anyone out there know why Greeks use the short name Tom or Tommy for Athanasios? The only link I can see is the theta sound of the TH (as in thing, think, thorough)of *TH*omas and A*TH*anasios in Greek.
