Re: Cool new thing on Behind The Name!
You can see a preview at:
http://www.behindthename.com/namesakes.htmlAs I was telling Nan, I am going to add more categories soon. To be really useful it needs to be searchable, a feature that will be added later. At this point I know there are many errors, but please let me know of any that you see. (I'm aware the French section is incompete)

Could a Danish finger print on the matter be allowed? (txt)Hi Mike C,I must surely agree with Nanaea and Gia . This new addition to behindthename.com is great, but I wonder if I would be allowed to donate some material which would add a Danish finger print on the new section? What I would like to give you is a complete chronological list of the Kings and Queens of Denmark from the earliest times until today where Margrethe 2. sits on the throne as Queen by Gods Grace . Then I would also be as bold as to ask if you would consider adding Saint Knud to the saint section you are building?Let us take the shorter piece first:About Saint Knud.
Knud den Hellige was king of Denmark from 1080 to 1086 his death was most violent as it formed as a regicide. He was later canonised and 1101 his earthly remains were moved to the church of Saint Alban . He is also known as Saint Canute , which is a sort of transcription of Knud into a sound word which is easier to pronounce by those unfamiliar with Danish. Especially the hard "k" and "d" seems to be difficult for some. Yet, it's original spelling is "Knud".And now for the chronological list of the Kings and Queens:
The Kings and Queens of Denmark.Gudfred 810
Gorm den Gamle 940
Harald (1.) Blåtand 985
Svend (1.) Tveskæg ?-1014
Harald (2.) 1014-1018
Knud (1.) den Store 1018-1035
Hardeknud 1035-1042
Magnus den Gode (Norway) 1042-1047
Svend (2.) Estridsen 1047-1074
Harald (3.) Hen 1074-1080
Knud (2.) den Hellige 1080-1086

Queen Anna Maria , wife of ill-fated King Constantine of Greece, is as you probably know is Danish :)
She tops my list of female royalty both in terms of looks (she was a knockout back in the 60s and has reacted very gracefully to the ravages of time)and in character(down to earth and unassuming).

I agreeShe was and is a beautiful woman. I am not terribly well informed on this matter, but to me it seems as if the people of Greece is rather divided in the question about their monarch. We see both Queen Anne Maria and King Constantine in Denmark now and then when the royal family comes together.

Thanks!Thanks Selwyn !
I will definitely add the Danish monarchs. But first I am going to launch the section with just the categories that I have now.If anybody else would like to submit a list of namesakes please contact me first at mike-AT-behindthename.comI'm open to both historical and mythological lists. I would be very interested in comprehensive lists of characters from a various branches of mythology. But please contact me first so I can give you some guidelines on how to format the list so it can be used by my computer.

If you told me how then (txt)If you told me how I could format the list as you would like it.
In order to save you the work I mean.

This is the best format for me:* Use a plain text file (use TextEdit or NotePad, definitely NOT Microsoft Word)* Each line of the file is for a different king, in order* A line consists of NAME + tab + TITLE + tab + DATES + tab + AKA + tab + INFO
NAME is the first name of the king or queen
TITLE includes any appellations or titles that follow the name
DATES are the years spent reigning
AKA is for alternate forms of the name (seperated by commas if more than one)
INFO is for brief misc. information
tab is the tab key, separating each fieldHere are two example lines:
KnudtabI den Storetab1018-1035tabCanutetabsaint
FrederiktabVIItab1848-1863tabtabtab = the tab key, since it will not appear in the message* Attach the text file to an email to mike-AT-behindthename.com
If you feel really industrious you can give me a VERY brief description of the history of the Danish monarchy so I will know what to write in the introduction. :)

I will do that thenI will have it ready soon I hope.

doneSelwyn,
The Danish monarchs are now included. I editted down your introduction a wee bit and started the list with Gorm instead of Gudfred. I also Anglicized some of the names and titles. Sorry :( This had to be done to make the names jive with the rest of the info in the database I keep on my home computer. But don't worry, all of the information you provided is retained and I am currently exploring ways to make the namesakes searchable by both the native and anglicized form of the name. Thanks for your help, you made my part of the job very easy!

I understand (txt)I understand you took away Gudfred. I myself think he is reall enough, but as I mention in the text the danish moarchy can "only" be traced back for sure to Gorm. So it will be safer to start with him.I also understand that you Anglicized the names. I wondered myself if should do that but was not sure I would get it right so I left it undone.I thank you for adding the material sir.-Selwyn
