Mar is right about the Greek origin of KIRK: Kyriakos is the generally accepted explanation of Kirke, Kirche, church. However, there is a second theory, which is at least worth considering (even though the Grimm brothers denied it): Latin "circus," maybe because some churches were built where in earlier times e circle of rocks had stood as a place of ritual worship.
