This site - http://www.namenerds.com/irish/ - describes it as an Irish name, a diminutive of Cathal meaning "strong in battle".

This site - http://www.crosswinds.net/~daire/names/celtcimmale.html - says it's a Manx name deriving from the Irish name Ceallachan, which is probably derived from a word meaning "church".
