The reason being that it's a feminine form of a name that would have honored both her grandfathers, Michael and Michael. Plus, I really liked it. Trendy sound, but it has *some* history, and I agree that the sound/vibe is friendly.
I would have used Michaela, nothing weird.

True, but I wouldn't have cared what people thought. Michaela just looks nicer than the alternate spellings.
