Re: Morgan
in reply to a message by Lily
I only know of one girl Morgan (early 20s, from Zimbabwe). Not popular here, therefore. But I always assume that Morgans are male, and though I can see the point of avoiding the fateful Morgana, that doesn't make Morgan a good option for a girl. But, I had a several-times-great grandfather whose fn was Morgan, so I do have a personal angle on it.

Morgan is also a feminine name from Welsh mythology. I'm not quite sure whether it originated as a feminine name from mythology and an English boys name at the same time or whether one happened before the other. But it's legit as a girls name.

Well, the Welsh connection goes back far beyond the development of surnames. She's an odd character, isn't she? Mor- should reference the sea, but she's pretty well earthbound in the Arthurian stories. A very ancient lady, clearly!
