Aidan is far and away the only spelling I like. It probably would be misspelled from time to time; like you said, it's no longer the most common spelling, and it has become like Michaela and Caitlin in that there are so many ways to spell it, it's sort of anyone's guess. I have to say, though, that as an Alison, my name has often been misspelled as Allison and (more rarely) as Alyson or Allyson, and it's not a big deal. It frustrated me some as a kid, but as an adult I don't care. I imagine an Aidan could feel the same way.
Aidan would make a great middle name. The middle spot is the perfect place to put a name you think might be too out there or too common to use as a middle name.
