Because of the history behind it. Elaina looks a bit odd to me - I would pronounce it the same way as Elana, which looks so much better, in my opinion.Like you said, Elaina looks too "now." I think it will definitely jump out as being from this time in later years. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on what you want from the name. For some, sound and meaning take prevalence over trend.
