Elaine vs. Elaina
My interest in Lainey has gotten me to rethink Elaine. Plus my Grandmother's middle name is Elaine, which has the bonus of being a family name.
However, Elaina seems more modern, and I like the sound a little better.
But Elaina may be too modern, giving it a date-stamp later. Plus I think Elaine may have more history behind it (it is a form of Helen, a name I think is coming back into fashion), and like Jane and Susan is due to comeback and some point.
So my questions - which is better - Elaine or Elaina?

Try Elena
which is pronounced the same as Elaina
I prefer Elaine to either, it is so sweet and pretty and simple. I really dislike the "modern-ness" behind it - that is, I dislike the modern obsession with long a's, l's, and n's.
Elaina would also be a form of Helen - as would Elena - just an elaborated version of Elaine. Elaine does have more history though
I way prefer Elaine but whatever you like better is what you should go with.

Elena.
But If I had to pick, Elaina. One of my favorite names is actually Alaina.

Elaine
Because of the history behind it. Elaina looks a bit odd to me - I would pronounce it the same way as Elana, which looks so much better, in my opinion.
Like you said, Elaina looks too "now." I think it will definitely jump out as being from this time in later years. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on what you want from the name. For some, sound and meaning take prevalence over trend.

Elena! Elaina looks contrived
Agreed
Elaine
Definitely much less susceptible to trends. Elania just sounds too princessy to me.

My sister, born in the late '70s, is named Elaina after my grandmother Elaine. I like Elaina; I think the a at the end softens it a bit.
Definitely Elaine
It seems to have a bit more sophistication to it. Plus my first best friends MN was Elaine, so it makes me think of her :)

I like Elaine so much better. Precisely, it does have more history and feel less modern. I also like French forms better than Latinate.
