I don't think it's even remotely common. I googled it, and it was mostly links to cities, companies, or products with Ione in the name. It is pretty though.

I believe Violet is related to Iole, not Ione. The meanings here on BtN list Iole as "violet" and Ione as a place name.

I didn't know that Violet and Ione were etymologically related. And yes, I do agree that it's cool that two of my fave names for females are connected. In my experience, Ione certainly isn't a common name, though it may have been more common earlier in the 20th century.
