Ione?
What do people think of the name Ione? I have recently learned that it was more popular earlier in this century, so many may associate it with old women. I have never known a real woman with that name, and the only time I ever heard it was on actress Ione Sky. Hence, I have always associated the name with a young, pretty woman, not an older woman. For that reason, I think it's a very pretty name for girls, but I would be curious to hear what the rest of you think of that name.

I have to post on my favorite girls name. I have heard different definitions for this name from different sources. Some say it's a place name, some say it is violet like the color, others say it is violet like the flower, and one source says it means "violet colored stone." When I was naming my daughter I didn't think of this name. I avoided reading baby name books and web sites when I was pregnant, because I was concerned I would actually begin to second guess all of my choices, making the decision harder. AFTER I had my daughter, I started reading baby name books and web sites because after picking a name I thought was unique, but not too weird, I suddenly started hearing it every where, and wanted to reassure myself it wasn't becoming hugely popular. Maybe that's a little obsessive. Anyway, while reading name web sites, I discovered Ione, and wished I would have thought of it. It became my favorite girls' name. So I mentioned the name to my husband, and he absolutely hates it. Which is a downer. There are other reasons I shouldn't use it if I have another girl, and I've mentioned them on this board before. I am afraid to mention them again as some posters who read regularly get tired of posters repeating posts. But if I can't use it, I would love to see someone else use it. The only downside - some people pronounce it EYE-OWN, which I hate. I absolutely love EYE-OH-NEE, and to me that is the only way the name should be pronounced.

I have known a real person with this name - somebody I used to work with (in London). She's in her late 20s I'd guess. Very into music, pretty, quite cool. I've never associated it with the turn of the century.I think it's a nice name but Iona is more well known and more popular.

It would be interesting to know if the name 'Ione' is more popular in the United Kingdom.

I know an Iona who (I think) is about 11 or 12 and pronounces eye-OWN-uh. The sibset is Iona, Pippa, Freya, and one more girl that I can't remember.

I adore the name Freya, since it's the name of the Norse goddess of love and beauty. It's cool to hear that there are girls who actually have that name.

Just realized that her name is Iona, not Ione. Oops ;) I still like it though.

Somebody in your Violet thread said......that Violet is a form of Ione. Did you know that before? It's kind of cool that two of your favorite names are connected like that. I don't think it's even remotely common. I googled it, and it was mostly links to cities, companies, or products with Ione in the name. It is pretty though.

Iole, not IoneI believe Violet is related to Iole, not Ione. The meanings here on BtN list Iole as "violet" and Ione as a place name.

Oh, okayMaybe that's what was meant by the person I read it from.

I didn't know that Violet and Ione were etymologically related. And yes, I do agree that it's cool that two of my fave names for females are connected. In my experience, Ione certainly isn't a common name, though it may have been more common earlier in the 20th century.

Brief correctionI meant to say that Ione was more popular earlier in the 20th century (i.e., LAST century) not THIS century (the 21st).

I really like it. I recently "discovered" it.

As I said in my above post, I first discovered it on actress Ione Sky many years ago...and I haven't heard it before or since. I am really looking forward to meeting a lady in real life with this name.

I think you mean earlier last century? I like it, I like most greek names because you say them how there spelt (the e on the end). I've never met or heard of anyone with this name so its not old lady or young to me. Its very pretty, and uncommon so she'd probably never meet anyone with the same name.

Yes, I meant earlier *last* century, i.e., the 20th century...my bad. And I agree that it's a very pretty name.
