Po v. Poe
I know this is really, really silly of me, but the spelling changes the entire feel! I know they still sound the same, but in my mind, when I hear the sound "po" and know it's spelled Poe, it feels right. If I hear it and know that it's spelled Po, it sounds icky and teletubbyish to me. I can't explain it, but my mind automatically fills in the connotations, I think.

I agree that the spelling makes a difference. In general it makes a huge difference to me, cos I'm another one of those people that sees words spelt out in their head :-)But because we never studied any Poe at school and I haven't read any since, I just don't have enough associations with him for the 'e' to mean anything yet. (I certainly will read some of his work when I get round to it, because i've heard such good things about it here.)

fair enough...It's not silly at all. What you expressed here makes perfect sense. You said it best with Edgar Allan Poe. I like a balanced view so I definitely consider & appreciate your input.:o)
