Re: Names I've never understood the love for
Gertrude - This is actually one of my guilty pleasure names! I love the nicknames Gertie and Trudie. I love the meaning "spear of strength". Olga - I also find this name unpleasant. However, I do understand its relevance in Russian and Eastern European cultures. Martha - I have always disliked the "mouth feel" of this name. I do love Marta though!Margaret - Oh, I love this name. I like that it means 'pearl'. She is the saint of expectant mothers, so I do understand the name's popularity and longevity. Plus, many of the nicknames are so cute.Sheila - Agreed on this one. It's another name where the "mouth feel" is unpleasant for me.Dinah - To me, it depends on pronunciation. I like 'Die-nah' and dislike 'Dee-nah'. I don't really know why. It just has a cute, vintage feel to me. Very 'Alice in Wonderland' vibes for me (which is positive to me).Beulah - It is an unpleasant sounding name. It isn't too popular though, so I think there are quite a few people who agree with you on that opinion.Evelyn - While I do think think there are better Eve- names out there, Evelyn is ok. I like the nn Evie. It just sounds soft and pretty, even if I dislike '-lyn' endings.Madison - Agreed with you on this one. I do not see the appeal at all. There are so many significantly better Mad- or Ad- names!Susan - This one is hard for me to be objective on because I have a terrible association with this name. Prior to that association, however, I did like the names Susan and Susanna. I think the nn Suzie is cute and the meaning 'lily' is beautiful. Grace - Aw, I like this one. It just sounds classy and pretty. I think part of its popularity is due to it reminding folks of Grace Kelly and the other part is due to the religious connotations. Lucy - Agreed on this one. All I hear is 'loose'. Danielle - Aw, I think this name is pretty, even though I have bad associations with the name. Samantha - Well, this is my name, haha! So, I cannot be objective. I love my name. My parents wanted to name me Stephanie, but when they got to the hospital, there were 6 babies named Stephanie! So, my dad opened the baby name book and made another list. Apparently, when he saw 'Samantha', he knew it was the one. He thought it was 'so beautiful'. He has said if I were born today, he'd name me Isabella. I think my parents just like ultra feminine names (they also like Alexandra and Victoria). I personally like the witchy connotations of my name (even before Bewitched). Amanda - This one is ok for me. I'm pretty neutral. I like the nn Mandy. Ashley - I see the appeal of this one. It has a very soft sound and a connection to nature.Linda - I mean, I also do not like this name due to many terrible associations. I do not like the sound of the name either. However, I do understand why others might like it. It coincides with the Spanish/Portuguese word for 'beautiful'. Oliver - I love the nn Ollie. I love the associations with Oliver Twist and Oliver & Company. Benjamin - I have liked this name since I read 'The Tale of Benjamin Bunny'. I also think the name 'Ben' is just an approachable name. It's friendly and won't rock the boat.Samuel - Aw, I like this name. I just like the sound of it. But I like the 'Sam' sound in general (of course, I am incredibly biased).Daniel - I'm pretty neutral on this name. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. 'Dan' is an approachable name. Of the people I know who named a kid Daniel, they liked the religious connotations.Asher - I like this one. I like the 'Ash-' sound in general. I like the connection to ash trees. It also has a super cute meaning of 'happy, blessed'. Dylan - Ugh, I kind of agree on this one. I've never really seen the appeal. But I guess Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan fans might like it for those connotations.Ian - Ian is ok. A bit bland for me. But I think the blandness is the appeal to some folks.Jerry - Agreed on this one. Just an ugly sound to me.Jeremy - I see the appeal of Jeremy. It's not a name I like, but I like the rhythm of it. Cooper - Yeah, I don't know why someone would want to name a human this.
