I actually really like the nn Cate, and it doesn't look funny to me, but the other nn I really like is Kit, which I really would feel weird using since we're spelling it with a C, but I like that nn so much I may still do it!

I don't see why Kit couldn't work as a nn for Catherine. I strongly suspect the nn Kitty came about as a result of the CATherine spelling (kitty cat). It's an adorable nn.
