From what I can tell, it appears to be the feminine form of Sholem. I'm guessing (an educated guess, but a guess nonetheless) that Sholem is a variation of Shalom, meaning peace? Perhaps someone more knowledgable can either substatiate or refute my theory. :o)

Yes.Sholem is the Yiddish version of Shalom. Sholem Aleichem is the pen-name of probably the most famous Yiddish author of all time.
