[Opinions] Hazel
I was talking to my husband the other day and he surprised me when he said he really liked the name Hazel for a girl. We've talked about named before but this was the first time he'd mentioned this name. I was also very surprised to see that it was ranked 175th for girls in 2012. I don't recall ever meeting anyone named Hazel, young or old.If you were to use Hazel, would it be as a first or middle name? FN and/or MN suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would use Hazel as a first name...if it weren't for the fact that it's my (living) great-aunt's name. I wouldn't want to name my baby after any living relative (especially since this great-aunt is Jewish, and there's an old Jewish superstition about naming babies after living relatives). Oh well!

About Hazel ranking 175, yes, it's been making a big comeback. The parents of today don't remember the old ladies named Hazel, the way that I at age 53 do, so it's seeming charmingly antique.I certainly do remember an old lady named Hazel, because Hazel was my maternal grandmother's name. She was born in 1906 and died in 1989.Well, to me as a kid and a teenager, Hazel was an "old lady name" and not one that I would have stopped to think whether I really liked or not. I wrote it off as an "old lady name". This was during its time off the charts, of course. But now I find it, as described above, charmingly antique, and a little ugly but ugly in a charming way. Very 1920s flapperish. I have a soft spot for it and am glad to see it coming back.If my third grandson had been a girl, the name was going to be Hazel. Being my grandmother's name, it is a family name, and that was part of the reason that the name had been decided upon, but my daughter and son-in-law do like the name itself, also.So yay Hazel.

When my sister and I were little, we would pick wood violets and take them to our neighbor Hazel, who would give us home made cookies or ice cream. It's not my style, but I can see it being used again, along with the other 'old person' names. It's not really my style, so I'd probably use it as a mn.

I tried to like Hazel, but I just can't .It's old, wizened, and gray. Those aren't bad things, but I don't think it suits a little girl or a young woman at all. It's wheezy, it's unattractive, it's not charming-ugly, it's just ugly . I'm sorry.

Ninety-five percent of the time, I don't read other responses before I make my own. This is because I don't want to be influenced by others' opinions before I state my own. The only times I haven't done this is when I initially had decided I wasn't going to respond to a post, but then changed my mind.I tell you this so you know that I made my post before I read yours. Since I twice stated in my post that Hazel is ugly in a charming way, and then read your response "it's not charming-ugly, it's just ugly", I wanted you to know that I didn't say what I did to specifically disagree with you. It's coincidence that we chose the same words in stating opposite opinions.

My godmother changed her name from Hazel to Rebecca 20+ years ago. We call her Hazel Rebecca when she's not around to bite our heads off for it. It's the only Hazel combo I like at all.

It's my Auntie's name - she's about 55. Her sister is called Stella, what a lovely sibset!I like Hazel a lot. Obviously I wouldn't use it because it's my Auntie's name, but I think it's quite sweet but strong. It's not overly frilly but it's definitely feminine and ages well, in my opinion. Hazel Evangeline

I like Hazel. It just seems so sweet and harmless, yet with a sneaky side of sass. :) It also give a bit of a celebrity-trendy vibe.I suspect some of the general public might think it's too old-lady-ish. Hazel Amadea!!
