Ellie is cutesy and colorless to me. I guess it could stand on its own but it seems like every Elizabeth, Gabrielle, Isabella and Danielle growing up now is called Ellie.

I'm not sure about that. Gabrielle and Danielle aren't popular with young girls and Ellie seems forced as a nickname for them. I also think Isabella nn Ellie is quite far fetched, most will be Izzy or Bella. It also doesn't seem to be used commonly as a nickname for Elizabeth.
I guess it could become pretty common on its own, but I don't really see it being used for any of the names you mentioned. Eleanor nn Ellie might become popular. Ella is popular but I've never met a single one who went by Ellie.
