[Facts] popularity animations
I've generated some animations that show the popularity of select names in the States between 1960 and 2010. Some of the animations illustrate that there was a region where the name first became popular. Others demonstrate how rapidly some names rise and fall.
Follow this link and choose the name at the bottom of the screen.

(note, you need a modern browser to view the animations - eg Firefox, Safari, IE9)

Very cool, but is there any way to get the window bigger? I can never see the whole country at the same time.
Same problem for me, with a Desktop Opera browser, version 11.11 (quite recent).
Maybe the problem is that this line in the HTML does not specify a size:
embed src="/top/stateimage.php?speed=&start=0&end=0" type="image/svg+xml"
Anyway, cool feature. What impresses me most is that Mike managed to come up with an idea that I did not yet see anywhere else - and that means something in an overcrowded area like given name websites.

That seems to have fixed the problem on my iPad. How does it look for you now?
perfect :)
Perfect now, thanks! Looks really nice.
By the way, congratulations for the fast ressurection of the site after the crash :)

Great, thanks for checking that.
Two days doesn't seem especially fast to me. I was out of town when it happened so I was relying on my hosting provider to fix the problem. It's a relief that no data was lost - there are regular backups of course, but it always makes me nervous when a hard drive dies!

Hmmm... I saw this problem on an ipad. Are you on a mobile device or tablet?
Just a regular computer (not laptop) with a huge screen. Windows 2007, google chrome.
Awesome!
Love it!
