Searlas, or Charlie as he more commonly is called, moved out of Ireland when he was only 5 years old. Even though he has spent most of his life in America his parents have never let him forget where he came from. Charlie left school at 14 to go work at his father's pub cooking, cleaning, and fixing anything that needs fixing. Palmira, who Americanized herself as Polly, moved to America at 13 with her older sister after her parents died to live with their aunt and uncle. Polly was instantly put to work helping her uncle sell the catch on the docks where she first met Charlie. Charlie and Polly quickly developed feelings for one another. Although his parents are not pleased that he has decided to marry a Portuguese girl, they are happy that she is Catholic.
