Andrew and Nikki have been a very busy couple. Andrew finally graduated with his doctorate last year, and he landed an awesome job working as a physical therapist at a private clinic. He loves doing what he does, and he's happy that he and Nikki no longer have to juggle classes, two jobs, the kids, and time with each other. Nikki enrolled the boys in daycare for a year so that she could work and make a little bit of money while Andrew finished up his doctorate. She had decided to work part-time, then found out that she was expecting another baby! She and Andrew really hadn't planned on any more kids after the twins were born--taking care of three kids under three was a challenge! Nevertheless, both Andrew and Nikki were excited about this baby, especially when they found out that it was going to be a girl.
Andrew's father Philip had been battling prostate cancer since the time that Nikki met Andrew. He was always in and out of the hospital, so Andrew and Nikki did their best to help his mom out when they could. Unfortunately, Grandpa Philip's cancer spread to the rest of the body, and he decided that it was time for him to call it quits. He refused treatment, and the doctor's gave him a year to live. About six months into that year, Nikki found out she was expecting her baby. Philip wanted very much to meet his new granddaughter, but no amount of radiation or chemotherapy would have made a difference, so he hoped that he would live long enough to see his second granddaughter born (Andrew's younger sister was married and had a one year old daughter).
One week before Delilah Nicole Baker was born, Philip passed away. The family was devastated, even though they knew that his death was coming. When Delilah was born, Andrew and Nikki decided to give her the middle name Jules instead of Nicole. So, Delilah Jules Baker will grow up never knowing her grandfather, but she will carry his middle name. Shiloh, Ezra, and Jason are a bit confused about where Grandpa Philip went, but the excitement of a new baby in the house seems to have diminished their curiousity.
This is just for my reference, so I don't have to keep backtracking to previous rounds.
Second Round
Shortly after Shiloh turned six months old, Nikki felt the familiar morning sickness that she had felt while carrying her first child. She tried to brush it off as a touch of the flu--after all, she couldn't be pregnant again so soon after Shiloh's birth. After two weeks, however, Nikki thought that a second pregnancy might be a possibility. She took a pregnancy test and was shocked to find that it was positive. She told Andrew that night that she was expecting again. He was just as surprised as she had been, but excited about the prospect of being a new daddy once again.
Since Andrew still had 1 1/2 years of schooling left to get his doctorate, they decided that Nikki would work for as long as she was able--after all, she had just returned to work after four months of maternity leave. Andrew continued at his schooling and his part-time job. Nikki worked until her fifth month, but she started getting really tired. She asked her OB if there was something she could do to ease her fatigue. He said that he wasn't sure, and ordered an extra ultrasound to make sure that the baby was doing okay. To everyone's surprise, that second ultrasound showed that Nikki was carrying twins! Nikki continued working for another three weeks, then decided to call it quits.
Nikki enjoyed being home all day, especially since she had more time with Shiloh (who didn't have to go to the neighbors all day) and Andrew (whom she saw between his classes). Nikki went into labor one morning six weeks before the twins were due. The doctors had told her to expect a preterm delivery, but she and Andrew were still scared that something would be wrong with their babies. However, Ezra Johan and Jason Felix were both healthy little boys. They are fraternal twins--evidenced by Ezra's green eyes and baldness and Jason's brown eyes and head of brown hair. Andrew and Nikki were able to bring the boys home when they were two weeks old. Shiloh, who is now walking and climbing everything in sight, is intrigued by his little brothers. He doesn't like it when they cry, but he likes watching them eat and he enjoys touching their smooth baby skin. Rowan too, has taken the new babies in stride, just as he did when Shiloh was born.
First Round
Andrew and Nikki enjoyed their lives together immensely. They bought a three-bedroom rancher with lots of backyard space because the apartment was getting a little cramped. About a year after they were married, Nikki found a stray puppy outside of the hospital. She took it to the local shelter, like any good citizen; however, the shelter told her that they had no room for the dog. Nikki called Andrew, and he agreed that they could foster the puppy until a permanent home could be found for him. The shelter gave him a vet checkup, and he was completely healthy. The shelter employees told Nikki that it would take a week or two to process the puppy, whom they named "Rowan". Nikki took Rowan home, and immediately fell in love with the rough and tumble little dog. He looked to be a Golden Retriever cross with some Pitbull in him--he was a reddish color and had humongous paws. When Andrew got home from his clinical that day, he fell in love with Rowan too. Over the next few days, both Andrew and Nikki tried not to get too attached to Rowan, but it proved impossible. That weekend, Nikki called the shelter and said that they wanted to permanently adopt Rowan. Andrew went out and got chain-link fence for the backyard and installed it. Now, nearly a year later, Rowan is a happy, healthy puppy--and growing bigger all the time. His head already reaches Nikki's thigh when he stands up, and he's not even done growing yet.
Another big event in the Baker family's life is the addition of a child! After they adopted Rowan, Nikki started getting sick. She could barely make it to work in the morning, but was too stubborn to call off sick. After about a week, her coworkers started noticing the change in Nikki and asked if she was pregnant. Nikki hadn't thought much about that prospect, but supposed it was possible. She took a pregnancy test that afternoon and, to her surprise, it was positive. She called Andrew right away, and he was very excited.
Nikki and Andrew decided that she should work for as long as possible. And she did. Nikki worked right up until two weeks before the baby was born. At that point, she was very tired and couldn't stand or walk around for more than an hour or so at a time. Andrew was still taking classes, but took on a part-time job to give them some sort of income. Luckily, Nikki's workplace also paid for the first four months of maternity leave.
Andrew and Nikki's first child, a little boy, was born on April 15th. They named him Shiloh Anderson Baker. They chose Shiloh because they liked the way it sounded, and it meant "tranquil". They chose Anderson because it means "son of Andrew", and in Andrew's family, the firstborn son's middle name always reflects the father's name. Nikki has joked that when Shiloh has a son, he'll have to name him "Shilohson". Andrew just laughed.
Sign Ups
Andrew and Nikki first met when Andrew was doing his physical therapy clinicals at the hospital where Nikki works. It was love at first sight, for Andrew at least. Nikki wasn't looking for a man--she had just broken up with her boyfriend of three years after learning that he had been secretly dating one of her best friends for over six months. The first time they met, Andrew had gotten lost and was looking for a patient's room where he was supposed to observe a therapy session. Nikki directed him to the correct room and continued on with her day. The next day, Andrew was lost again--purposely. For the next few days, he would come to the therapy room seeking directions to one room or another, and Nikki would direct him to the correct place. The next week, Andrew decided to see if Nikki wanted to go to the hospital cafeteria for some coffee. He figured he could get to know Nikki better, and she wouldn't feel like it was a date--after all it was the hospital's cafeteria. Although Nikki intended to decline, she found herself nodding when Andrew asked her to the cafeteria. Over the next few weeks, Andrew and Nikki met up several times. Nikki could feel herself growing closer to Andrew, and Andrew had known all along that Nikki was the girl for him.
Three months after they met, Andrew and Nikki went on their first official date. They went out to eat dinner after work one night, and both enjoyed their time immensely. The next eight months flew by as Nikki continued working at the hospital, and Andrew finished up his Physical Therapy degree. He graduated with his Master's degree and intends to get his doctorate before he begins working. He still has four years of school left, but he and Nikki decided to get married anyhow, since Nikki had already been working for three years and had saved up some money.
The wedding was a small family affair. Andrew and Nikki were married in Nikki's childhood church, and they held their reception at a local banquet hall. They went on their honeymoon to Europe--a place both Andrew and Nikki had wanted to visit. They did some sightseeing in Paris, London, Rome, and they even spend a few days in Istanbul, on a whim. Now they are back in the United States. They moved into Nikki's one bedroom apartment, but plan to put a down payment on a small house in the near future.
