Well, I’m an Angela, that makes me well-qualified to speak on “Angel” names. Hah - maybe that’s an over-statement but here’s my assessment:
I’ve never heard of Angelie (pronounced AHN-zhuh-lee or AHN-juh-lee) before, but I just love it. I feel it would be a shame to compromise here.
And, I personally feel Angelina would a compromise. This is a current fad name - more popular than Angela now for the under 5 set - and I credit Miss Jolie for this trend. Angelina is also one of those sickly sweet girl’s names that seems to be coming into fashion. I don’t care for this trend myself. I’m not a fan of the androgynous trend for girls either. Both are equally bad.
And like your boyfriend, I don’t see the appeal of Miss Jolie. Other than being incredibly beautiful, I just find her, like other Hollywood actresses, a big faker. I guess that is her job, to be a faker, but I don’t really get the obsession with Hollywood actors / Actresses in general. I feel this obsession is driven by shallowness. Being good looking does not make for a good role model for kids.
Ok, I got side-tracked there. I could go on and on about why I don't like Angelina Jolie, but I guess that is too much of a tangent. Other Angel names I like are Angelica - like you said - and Angelique. Angelique Kidjo is an African singer who has turned me on to the name. I could live with Angeline. And my name, Angela, is a little dated, but I think it is the original and it will come back someday... maybe like when I'm 90. (In about 60 years.)
