[Facts] Re: Lael
in reply to a message by x
Lael is a rare biblical name, occurring to the best of my knowledge only once, in Numbers 3:24, as the father of yet another obscure character. The meaning is given as "to El (God)" or "belonging to El (God)".

Seems to be a pretty name to me! How is it pronounced?
I've read all the messages on Lael by x, and come to the conclusion that it's properly pronounced: LAY-ale, with both the a and the e sounding like ay as in hay. If the -el means God, it is Ale, not Ell. But if you try to pronounce it that way, it will sound like mail, because the l colors the ay sound. ("Colors" is a term for what r does to a vowel I found in my dictionary.)
Y :)
Y :)
the meaning of the name is 'of God" if that helps any. at least that is what i've found
That makes me think it's [L'ale], [L'-] being like the prefix [Ha-], meaning [the]. Y :)
i've asked a few people. those with the name pronounce it like mail
Good question! Maybe LAY-ul?
Yes, that seems to be a very possible pronunciation. :-) I myself was thinking something like Láh-ell (?). (The 'Lah' is pronounced like the French word 'la'.)
