[Facts] Re: (Sorry - I must have barted)..."Tofino" mean?

I've been in Tofino for the past week. Apparently Tofino is named for a Spanish explorer about whom I know nothing.
I believe southwestern Canada was home to Spanish trading settlements a few centuries ago before the British formally claimed the entire region and ousted them. However I would doubt that the small village of Tofino is more than 100 years old. It probably got its name from the inlet on which it sits, which got its name from Tofino the explorer.
My dad is a local history guru, so I will have to get some more information from him the next time we chat.
