Ruarc works part-time as a janitor at a restaurant and Lyra is an intern as a magazine editor. They've been together for a year, meeting each other in a math class.
Year 1
Lyra broke her ankle one weekend due to an unfortunate accident with a donkey. She was on crutches for 4 weeks.
Year 2
Lyra gets a part-time job in a different department of the same magazine, though she hopes to eventually become an editor or get another job.
Year 3
In a turn of events neither of them were prepared to, Lyra gets pregnant at 20...with triplets. Fortunately, Ruarc is able to start working full-time, but with both of them partway through attending University, this will be difficult. In wedlock, they marry.

Lyra fulfills her life-long dream of becoming a published author. She wrote a book about time management.

Ophelia got pregnant by her boyfriend of 6 months, who ends up moving in with the Kijeks.
