DCorgiDachshund: AshaCongrats on your triplets! They all have green eyes and chestnut hair. At birth they weighed around 5 lb 2 oz and were 15.7 inches long. You haven't completed the first round! First Round:
Marten and I were elated to announce Jasper’s birth. Born at 3:01am in Amsterdam, Jasper is a striking mix of both of us. He has inherited my emerald green eyes and his father’s light brown hair, which is currently coming out curly!
Although Marten’s mother, Margriet, has been a great babysitter, we thought it were vital for us to constantly be with Jasper throughout his early development. In order to do this, the first step we took was to adjust our jobs to make room for quality time. As a graphic designer with a Dutch women’s magazine, I successfully claimed my maternity leave. Marten, on the other hand, tried to condense his hours at his office, but was forced to resign and start work from home, which has been nonetheless successful. We still find ourselves busy, but not in the way that we were previously.
Our next step was to find a bigger house. We both knew that Jasper would be joined by siblings eventually and that my friends and family in Adelaide would want to visit, so in order to accommodate for this we moved to a larger house just outside of Amsterdam. Having spent over two years in a cramped apartment in inner-city Amsterdam, this came as an incredible change for us, as we were oblivious to such wonders like a backyard for the whole time we were there. We now have a nice backyard, reminiscent of my childhood yard in Adelaide and Jasper enjoys having a romp around in the sandpit on a nice sunny day every now and then.
On top of this, I missed having a dog around, having been brought up surrounded by animals, so Marten gave me Gus, a West Highland Terrier for a birthday present. Named after King Carl Gustav of Sweden, Gus has been an absolute pleasure even though it took him a while to get used to Jasper. Our big backyard has been serving its purpose and everything has fallen into place!
Second Round:
After four children, two pets and one sister in our household, it made it impossible for me to understand that only two years had passed since Jasper was born. And where to begin? It seems as if this entry will take me an eternity to finish.
At the start of the year, we were pleasantly surprised to have welcomed my sister, Fenella into our household. Fenella is here to study Dutch history and we thought it best that she stay with us as opposed to renting out a claustrophobic apartment in the city centre just as I had done all those years ago. Even though she is only 21, she is so mature, but knows how to have a good time. When she isn’t busy, she will often help me mind Jasper... and his three little brothers!
Yes, I had waited for the best possible moment to announce this, but Jasper is a big brother! Thomas, Timothy and Trevelyan arrived shortly after Fenella came to live with us. This time, we allowed Jasper to have some input towards his brothers’ names and he concluded that he wanted them to all have the same initials because they are triplets (don’t know where he got that from but anyway). Jasper has been a really good older brother and has been a great entertainer for all of us! He has developed an entertaining, outgoing personality which makes Marten and I consider him the funniest person we know. His endearing personality does have its negative side, as he can become mischievous... but we are active in disciplining him.
And finally, we noticed that Gus was lacking in attention of the four-legged kind since the sudden arrival of children and visitors galore, so Fenella encouraged us to buy another dog. Marten and I agreed knowing that our best bet was to save a dog as opposed to buying another perfectly healthy one. Not long afterwards, Fenella brought home Asha, a 5 month old three-legged corgi-dachshund cross that we had saved from being euthanized. Asha’s quiet, obedient personality was a great addition to the family, and she and Gus have gotten on very well!
So that concludes this round’s entry. Hopefully I will return with some more good news!Isadora
