Teddy is recovering in the family home after crashing his work van whilst drunk. He has now closed his decorating business and his main source of income has become gambling, something that he is remarkably adept at. He has become very fond of Nicole, the only one who is willing to sit with him and listen to his woes when he is having another bout of ‘the blues’.

Marie-Louise has also started to suffer from poor health, but the day she decided to go to a doctor was the day her ex-husband returned in need of nursing, so her complaints have been put aside. Her difficulties have caused her to be moved to a role with no travel opportunities, and far from all the friends she made during her career. She feels increasingly lonely and forgotten, and the one bright spot is her youngest child Nicole who keeps her company, helps her care for Teddy and encourages her to continue doing things for herself.

After two years in Greece, Anders returned home and was immediately pressured to find a financially viable job. This led him to move away again before long, and he found employment behind the front desk of a hotel in a picturesque coastal town. He began a relationship with a local Italian-American girl who works as a waitress in the café next door and the pair are now living together, and planning their wedding for next year. Anders’ partner is very understanding about the amount of time his little sister spends with them, and how often they are called to assist with babysitting his nephew.

Dylan surprised everyone by studying hard for the last three months before his final exams and gaining entrance to university. His parents’ pride and goodwill led them to overlook the fact that he did indeed get a tattoo and motorbike at the age of 18, though they were slightly more concerned when he and Sadie got ‘engaged’ as a joke after graduation. The pair was sternly warned that no wedding would take place until they had completed their studies, though it hasn’t stopped the Whitmore family’s first grandchild from arriving. The motorbike has now been sold and replaced with many toys. The baby’s grandparents have taken the burden for now to avoid derailing Dylan and Sadie’s studies, though a rude awakening is in store within the next year.

Céline has also left for university to study law, a course that was decided upon by her mother. She was inspired by Anders’ pursuit of a more unconventional career after school and asked to attend an art college instead, but Marie-Louise put a stop to that idea and swore that her daughter’s intelligence would not be wasted, and at least one of her children would make a success of their lives. University has proven difficult for her and Céline spends most of her time alone in her room. She used to come home to visit her mother, sister and her beloved Duke, but since her father’s health issues took over the house, she now takes the train to Anders’ home on weekends simply to have company.

Elias decided to postpone university for a year to travel. At first this was to his mother’s chagrin, but when the first postcards and fridge magnets arrived back home, she was reminded of her own adventurous youth and became more supportive of the idea. She is especially pleased that Elias has found a companion to travel with, a boy from Norway who shows up in many of his photos. Elias frequently states that this is the best year of his life and secretly dreads the idea of coming back to boring reality, as well as the moment when he and his companion will be forced to split at the airport and return to their own countries.

Nicole sees all the adventures her siblings are having, and feels stuck in a silent house with two sad parents who depend on her for help and company. She sometimes wishes she could follow their example and run away from it all. The one bright spot in the situation is that her relationship with her mother has never been better. With all four siblings out of the house, Nicole has her almost undivided attention, and is certainly her respite from nursing her ex-husband and caring for her grandson. The pair take day trips and even short holidays together whenever possible.
