The year is 1915, and the shadow of war looms large over Britain.
Alberic married Clemence in early 1911. Her charm and intelligence quickly endeared her to the Applebys, and her spirited debates with Myrtle over the suffragette movement have become a frequent and lively mealtime feature. The newlyweds set up house nearby, and by 1913, they welcomed their first son.
However, in 1914, when Britain declared war, Alby enlisted almost immediately. Clemence was left to manage their home and young son alone. Alby writes home regularly, his letters cherished by Clemence and tucked away.
Dunstan's apprenticeship in architecture flourished under the mentorship of a prominent London architect. His Gothic designs have earned him respect, and he began taking on small commissions. When war broke out, he did not much know what to do: the pressure to enlist was great, but is and remains a pacifist by heart.
By 1915, he resolved to serve as an ambulance driver, a compromise that allowed him to aid the war effort without taking up arms. His letters to the family are filled with vivid descriptions of the French countryside and sobering sketches of the wounded.
Dorothea volunteered with the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in 1915. She is stationed at a munitions factory, where she is a favourite among her peers. Though her letters home are cheerful and full of anecdotes, Myrtle senses the strain beneath her words. Dolly's bond with Ronnie deepened: as often as she can, she sends her younger sister small tokens of her affection and letters filled with encouragement.
Liberty's love of botany has grown into a scientific pursuit. She has begun working as an assistant at Kew Gardens, where she studies medicinal plants. She has also taken on the role of family historian, carefully preserving the letters sent from the front and documenting their lives during the war.
At 16, Horatio is too young to enlist, which embitters him: he feels left behind as his older brothers and sister went off to serve. He took on work at a local railway depot. The oldest boy at home now, he often helps Myrtle manage the household, a role he begrudgingly admits he enjoys.
Brosie fills sketchbooks with drawings inspired by letters from Alby and Dunnie. He has begun writing illustrated stories about knights and soldiers. Inspired by Dolly's letters, Ronnie has started a junior corps with neighbourhood children, knitting socks for soldiers.
Edric is overseeing railway logistics for the military, a role that keeps him close to home. Myrtle continues her tutoring and supports Ronnie in her patriotic zeal.
