Turmeric lived to an astounding 17. Though it's been two years, the family still misses him. A portrait Nellie painted of Turmeric is displayed proudly in the living room.
Polly has mellowed with age, but maintains an impish streak. Cinnamon is explosively energetic - Iseul and Baz are happy to spend long hours playing with him until he finally collapses, exhausted, late in the evening.
The family has recently adopted a turtle, who lives in a carefully designed habitat in their garden.
The biggest change, however, came recently. Chika's younger sister and her daughter have moved in with the family, taking residence in one of the guest bedrooms. Chika's sister is a freelance writer and editor whose messy divorce has left her in dire financial straits - her husband was Nigerian-American, and they lived in New York, but she hadn't obtained American citizenship. Thus, she decided to start anew in Barcelona with her sister's family.
Her daughter is delighted by her cousins, especially Baz, who builds her elaborate blanket forts. Despite the upheaval caused by her parents' messy divorce and her moving countries, she is a happy, extroverted child who loves drawing, dressing up, and listening to bedtime stories Chika and her sister learnt in their childhoods.
