Ike has completed his studies. He has realised that while he waits for his writing to be noticed, he ought to find steady employment and not really on the hopes a publishing house will finally express interest. Thus, he has taken up the family mantle and become a teacher like Connie. He teaches literature and history at a San Francisco school, but still writes prolifically and visits the ranch when he can.
He is particularly close to his niece Francesca, and encourages her literary pursuits - though the family joke he is living vicariously through her.
