The ranch has officially passed to
Bo and
Zeke.
Jack is enjoying his well-earned retirement. He takes long, solitary walks around the ranch every day, admiring the legacy he has left to his children - even if some of them have flown the coop - and his adoring grandchildren.
Like her husband,
Connie now lives a calmer, quieter life. She often thinks of her children, especially those who have moved away from the Castañeda ranch. She keeps in touch with them as best she can. She and
Sally exchange frequent and long letters, discussing everything from suffragettes in California to the birth of new calves on the ranch.
Bo and
Angela have had another child.
Lionel is a curious boy who is particularly close to his aunt and uncle -
Alma and
Zeke. He is fascinated by
Zeke's inventions and tinkers on his own.
Francesca adores her Aunt
Mimi, who loves to draw illustrations for the stories she writes. Her younger brother recently turned 3.
Sally and
Jude have also welcomed a child: a daughter. The 2-year-old is inseparable from her mother and follows her to suffragette meetings in
San Francisco.
Jude's law practice is thriving. He's passionate about his work, but it leaves him less time than he'd like to spend with his ever-busy wife and daughter.
Zeke and
Alma have also welcomed a child: a baby girl who is the latest addition to the Castañeda family. They have their hands full with a baby and looking after the ranch, but
Jack and
Connie are always happy to help.
Marriage, it seems, does not suit
Mimi. Her paintings have become well known outside California, so she spends more time travelling to distant American cities. But she always finds time to return to the Castañeda ranch - she is undoubtedly her nieces' and nephews' favourite aunt.
Although she has always valued her independence, she has sometimes travelled with a companion - a fellow artist: a sculptor from Louisiana, the daughter of a French immigrant and a Creole musician.
Mimi's parents approve - progressive as they are, travelling alone can be dangerous for a young woman, so it is reassuring and gratifying that
Mimi has company.
Maggie has set up a veterinary practice. It is close enough to the ranch for her to visit every day, but far enough away for her to enjoy her independence. She serves both Native and settler clients, and is liked and respected by both.
Inspired by
Sally,
Ike has gone to college in
San Francisco. He writes delightful, witty letters home that the whole family reads together. In
San Francisco he sees a lot of
Sally,
Jude and his niece, who dotes on him. He visits the ranch during his holidays and regales his family with stories of university life, which he plans to write down and publish.
