It’s back to the kitchen garden this morning as we’ll be planting and seeding flowers along the vegetables. Flowers can be used in companion planting to help deter pests and attract beneficial pollinators. Some are even edible! Choose your
THREE favourites 🌼🌸🌺
1) Sunflowers
-They make great trellises for climbing plants, and they have lots of nectar to attract pollinators. Unfortunately, sunflowers also tend to attract squirrels, which can be a problem if you are growing them to save the seeds-
2) Nasturtiums
-Nasturtiums offer some protection from squash bugs and beetles. They are one of the more delicious edible flowers (and leaves) too-
3) Pot Marigolds (Calendula)
-In the garden, calendula is a mixed blessing. It repels some pests, such as asparagus beetles and tomato hornworms. But it also attracts a few others, including aphids, so don’t plant them near the peas-
4) Petunias
-Petunias repel plenty of garden bugs, such as asparagus beetles, leafhoppers, Mexican bean beetles, and tomato worms-
5) Cosmos
-Cosmos attract many helpful insects. For instance white or bright orange cosmos attract green lacewings which will help to prevent pest problems like thrips-
6) Lavender
-Deer tend to avoid it, along with many insects, including ticks. Even mice typically find somewhere else to snack-
7) Sweet Alyssum
-The Sweet Alyssum create a colorful carpet in the garden and attracts beneficial friends, like ladybugs and hoverflies but also bring butterflies and other pollinators into the garden-
8) Lupine
-Lupine is a legume that also fixes the nitrogen in the soil for other nitrogen-loving plants-
9) Zinnia
-Zinnias are magnets for bees and other pollinators. They are also popular with hummingbirds. The paler, pastel varieties seem to be attractive to Japanese beetles and can be used as a trap crop. You can also use them as cut flowers-
10) Borage
-Borage is a beacon for bees. It's known as part of the best vegetable garden companion trios: borage, tomatoes, and squash. Both its leaves and flowers are edible with a subtle cucumber flavor-
11) Daylily
-Daylilies attract pollinators and hummingbirds and chokes out weeds-
12) French Marigold (Tagetes)
-Marigols head off pests both above and below the ground, and they look great doing it. Ring your garden with marigold plants, and rabbits will think twice before crossing the line. They also exude a chemical that kills root nematodes in the soil. Not only that, they are edible too!-
