Within the first year of their marriage Axel and Charity gave birth to their firstborn, Sunny Autumn, she was named in the custom of Wildfire’s people’s traditions, meaning she was born during a Sunny Autumn’s day. Axel didn’t care much for her daughters birth, more for the parties that came with it, this was because he had wanted his firstborn to be a boy so that he could know his successor was a man but not everything went his way. It took them another three years to give birth to another child, Valentino, who Axel seemed more invested in, either way Wildfire was pleased to have two new beautiful children.

After three boys, Madame Thisbe the Bold began seeking ways to ensure her next child with Sir Lowen would be a girl. She took to praying to all deities she could, spending hours lost in her research with hundreds of books and scrolls open around her in their library. At last, one night, as she walked in the misty air and wept for her failure, a glint of something magic caught her eye. Following the twinkling light, she stumbled upon a hidden door to the Skyrise-Dragonfort home, tucked in the ground behind bushes and trees. The pale starry door, painted with the constellations in a glowing shade, glimmered under the fog-covered moon, and Thisbe knew it was magic.
Despite her knowledge of magic and its dangers, Madame Thisbe braved the dangers and swung open the door, the camouflaged wood smacking against the ground with a soft, almost inaudible thud, its sound masked by the magic enveloping it. The door now opened, the light of magic only grew brighter as it filled the secret passage. Her breath stopped in her chest, Thisbe pushed onward, following the soft twinkle that danced through the walls of the cavernous corridor. The lights, she noticed, danced in a pattern, a pattern that resembled glyphs she recalled seeing in one of her books.
Returning to the library with that knowledge in hand, she quickly found the source of the glyphs in an ancient scroll detailing the devotion and fealty the Skyrise bloodline had to Blodhlynde, the god of legacy. Many generations past, Sir Lowen's family had made a deal with Blodhlynde, that in return for an assurance of continuing bloodline, they would offer the deity their devotion. In love with Adrienna Skyrise, one of Sir Lowen's great-great-many-times-great grandmothers, Blodhlynde accepted the family's love and loyalty on one condition: Adrienna would give to Blodhlynde one night of passion, the resulting boy-child an assurance of the Skyrise legacy and of Blodhlynde's own.

It has been five years since Mercury retired from the cloak-and-dagger scene into tranquil domesticity. Or rather, as tranquil as it gets when your wife is a healer, pulling daggers out of the backs of failed assassins whose targets had outwitted them, and patching up the scrapes of adorable street children in desperate need of a bath, 12 hours a day, while they try to rifle through her pockets. One such patient was Lyra. 12 years old, tragically orphaned, with an angelic smile and hair that had never seen a comb, Lyra was perhaps the most skilled pickpocket in Guildford. Or so she thought.
Because while she was about to slip away from Maia after one of her visits, where she was told in a sternly, but motherly way, to steal more citrus because she was deficient in vitamin D, she was yanked by the collar. Maia had noticed that the wide-eyed, dirty-faced girl had stolen her wedding ring, and demanded she returned it. Lyra had two strategies for when she was caught. One was to run like her life depended on it, and the other was to cry. And since Maia had an iron grip on her frayed collar, she was left with only one option.
Her tears melted Maia's heart. She had a long conversation with Mercury - who remarked that they were probably too old to have children of their own - and it was agreed. The Blackbirds scooped Lyra up like an abandoned puppy, and she had lived with them ever since. Mercury, the erstwhile spy, found in Lyra a protégée of sorts. He regaled her with tales of espionage, while Maia nurtured her magical inclinations. Lyra displayed an innate talent for the arcane, particularly illusion magic - it was how she managed to evade capture for so long.
