Scandal strikes the Edwards family when Simon ends his engagement with Violet, who is pregnant with his daughter, unwilling, he says, to ruin his life over a youthful mistake. At the stern insistence of his mother and and a threat of losing his inheritance, he acknowledges his daughter Minnie, gives her his surname, and gives Violet, who has retreated to a small cottage in the Essex countryside owned by her family with Minnie, an allowance.
Another tragedy strikes when Jonathan, who has remained unmarried mostly due to his libertine proclivities, preferring to seek companionship with ladies of less reputable standing than his mother would prefer, is found murdered in one of London's more salubrious districts - presumably an encounter with a prostitute or her pimp having gone wrong. Caroline, with the help of a friend with a husband in the House of Commons, manages to hush the matter up, so as far as the newspapers are concerned, Jonathan was killed by robbers.
That very same year, Frances' daughter, Amelia, aged just six, is drowned in the bathtub by her nanny - who, apparently, having changed her name and fled the authorities several times, has previously killed three of her young female charges in a similar manner. This time, she is caught. An incredibly loud trial is held, and she is hanged, the newspapers all sending their condolences to the grieving Mr and Mrs Ravenswood, and the parents of the other murdered girls.
Simon, much to everyone's surprise, swiftly finds a wife who he claims is a much better fit for him than the haughty - now humbled - Violet, the young and pretty Norah Rosewood, an aspiring opera singer who seems not to be bothered by his less than pristine reputation.
Joan, who has started studies at one of Oxford's few female colleges, becomes engaged to Harvey Lee Hastings, a pleasantly animated middle-class medical student and amateur rower at Magdalen.
While neither Frances nor Robert can stave off the pain of losing their daughter, their rapidly expanding family - two sets of twins - offers some solace to them.
Simon, who was not judged to be much of a family man, welcomes three daughters - twins, followed by a single girl two years later - by his young bride, and seems to pay some attention to them, occasionally - something that cannot be said in regard to his illegitimate daughter Minnie.
