Marius, a primary school teacher, and Elsie, a visual artist, first met when Elsie gave a presentation about art to the children at Marius' school - four years later, they have just got married. Marius is originally from Oslo, but moved to Auckland with his family when he was 15; Elsie is a native of the city.

He keeps his parents' surname as a middle name, but takes the surname Solheim.

A local reporter gets wind of Roman's adoption, and immediately begins pestering the family for an interview about his tragic past. When they refuse, the reporter publishes a nasty piece which suggests Marius and Elsie may only have adopted him to make themselves look good.

A flu epidemic hits the area, and unfortunately takes the life of Elsie's mother.

Elsie decides to move away from art as a full time career and takes a part-time job at a nearby bank. She now produces art mainly for fun, although she does still sell her pieces.

Following Elsie's career change, Marius realises that he would also like to try something different. He finds a job teaching his native Norwegian (a language which his children are also largely fluent in) at a language school.

Marius and Elsie had definitely felt they were finished with children - six was enough. However, somehow or other, Finn and Frankie happen, plunging an already busy household into a certain amount of chaos. After they were born, though, they took more permanent steps to ensure there wouldn't be any more little Solheims!

Year 15 - Mexico City, Mexico
Now that the children are a little older - Finn and Frankie recently turned 4 - the family decide it's time for a change of scene. Eventually, they settle on Mexico (attending a private English-language school), with the agreement that if a majority of the family don't enjoy the experience, they can return to Auckland.

Year 20 - Mexico City, Mexico
The family decided to remain in Mexico City, where Roman is now studying computer science and Zack is studying English and Spanish literature.

Although she reached a fairly senior position within the bank branch where she worked, Elsie decides to return to her passion for art and become a full-time art teacher. Roman finishes his degree and finds a job as a developer at a tech startup based in Mexico City, which means he can stay close to Lina.

Year 22 - Mexico City, Mexico / Oslo, Norway (Zack)
Following an accident while a friend's parent was driving, Iris is hospitalised and eventually loses her left arm; she is initially devastated to think that she'll never be able to play football, which she loves, again, but her local-level team help her get back into the game. She also enjoys spending time with Roman and Lina's newly-adopted former-stray puppy, Miguelito. Zack finishes his degree and struggles to figure out where to go from there; when Marius' widowed mother has a stroke, he volunteers to move to Norway to take care of her, making money by teaching English online.

Year 23 - Toronto, Canada / Mexico City, Mexico (Roman) / Oslo, Norway (Zack) / Auckland, New Zealand (Seb & Nina)
After finishing high school, Seb and Nina decide to return to Auckland, their home for the first ten years of their life, to pursue a career as a band. The remaining family - Iris, Belle, Finn, and Frankie - decide it's time to move again, and settle on Toronto, Canada.
Lina finally finishes her degree in vet medicine; not long afterwards, she and Roman annnounce to their families that they are expecting a child. To placate Lina's Catholic family, they get married - as they're both from big families, it's a chaotic event. Their son is born in December.
