The Idowu Family

Alysia Peña, 19 at the time, met Suhayl Idowu during a mission to Rwanda. She had learned her third language, French (as well as English and Spanish, being half-American and half-Puerto Rican) to be able to journey on health missions across the world. She thoroughly enjoyed her 18-months there, and was sad to have to leave. The couple kept in-touch overseas though, and planned Alysia's return in only a few months. She stayed longer than expected, and Suhayl and Alysia got even more serious. At the end of the trip, they happily got engaged. Alysia made a permanent move to Rwanda, continuing her mission of tending to the medical needs of the people there. The couple just got married and are thrilled to begin their life together.

Alysia and Suhayl had a baby boy! They were not expecting to have kids so soon, but, of course, it was a pleasant surprise! His name is Sebastián Ayokunle. Sebastián honored Alysia's heritage and was easy to pronounce in English, French, Spanish and Swahili. Ayokunle means "joy has filled the home", which they liked and it honored Suhayl's heritage.

Alysia's mother was diagnosed with lung cancer, and only a week later passed away. Immediately after learning the diagnosis, Alysia and Sebastián flew down, but Suhayl had to stay due to his job. Alysia was able to spend time with her mom before her passing, and Sebastián got to meet his grandmother.

Alysia and Suhayl welcomed another surprise baby! This time, their first daughter! Lilia's first name was suggested over the phone by Alysia's sister. They really liked it, as well as her middle name, Akua. Alysia also got a pay-raise, which helped with the event of Suhayl having no job.

Alysia and Suhayl were terrified to be bringing another life into the world with only a single steady source of income, but they knew that they could make it through.
