A new history teacher joins the staff of a Durham secondary school. She quickly befriends the chemistry teacher, Mr Hawkins, who is smitten by the young historian. They become engaged only half a year later, and get married in April.

He's very attached to his parents and younger siblings, and to the friends he's already managed to make at school. Vera is a bit quiet, though not shy, and very responsible for a five-year-old - she's already learned to read.

Gaia and Adam start school this year. Gaia is very sociable and has made many friends already, and she enjoys drawing portraits of all of them. They're very good for 5-year-old standards. Adam isn't as outgoing as his twin sister, but is nonetheless a friendly child, though he can sometimes seams rude without meaning to be. 6-year old Vera has become quite a little biologist, and after long debates, her parents have agreed to get her 3 beta fish - the fish are inaccessible to Delilah and Freddie, which doesn't stop them for looking at them with longing. Vera claims to differentiate the fish, and has named them, but her parents think all three look the same.

Ray, who's always bought lottery tickets despite Estella continuously telling him he has a bigger chance of being hit by a meteor than winning, wins the lottery! The couple decide to spend the money on expanding Ray's bakery - opening a few more in Durham, and one in Newcastle upon Tyne.
