The Dowager Queen - reserved, bitter, solemn, melancholy, and yet a mother and a Queen all the same - had died. It was simple old age. No tragedy. And yet the family felt undone without her, and that was a tragedy anyway.
Nicholas had become engaged again at long last. She was barely a woman, and she was only a Viscountess, but Nicholas wasn't looking for a wife or an aristocrat - he was looking for a shield. He was looking, really, for his mother to stop asking him to remarry. But then his mother died, and he was stuck with an irritating waif of a fiancée for really no reason at all. Christopher and his trophy wife had two trophy daughters - both very pretty and very spoilt. Felix and his Irish wife, who seemed continually closer and more withdrawn from the others and themselves, had a little boy and a girl. And Oliver's stuck up Danish Princess gave him one of each, too. Not so bad, really.
