Saphirdufeu's Royal Congrats - Round 3
Round 1: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/game/4944377
Round 2: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/game/4944585Okay, Round 3! 5 years have passed, so the year is 1183 - age everyone up.
Dice: http://www.brockjones.com/dieroller/dice.htmRelationshipsFirst, roll d4 for any relationships - if you roll a 1, the couple is no longer together, due to death or divorce. Roll d10 for everyone over the age of 55, or under the age of 10 - a roll of 8-10 means that that person has unfortunately passed away. Now, roll d10 for everyone over the age of 14 who is single.
If they are aged 15 to 18, a roll from 7-10 is an engagement (but not one which can produce children.)
If they are aged 19 to 25, a roll from 5-6 is an engagement, and 7-10 is a marriage.
If they are aged 26+, a roll from 3-5 is an engagement, and 6-10 is a marriage.
Naturally, a member of the royal family cannot marry a commoner - and so, roll d6 for the title of the noble any royals marry:
1: Baron/Baroness
2: Viscount/Viscountess
3: Count/Countess
4: Duke/Duchess
5: Prince/Princess (of another country)
6: King/Queen (of another country)
Women who marry will take the title of their spouse - men will take the title of their spouse if it is higher than theirs. ChildrenNext up, children! Any children born this round should be under 5 years old, and will take the title of their parents (unless their parents are King & Queen, in which case they are Prince/Princess). Roll d20.
For a potential mother aged 18-23: 1-10 is no children, 11-15 is 1 child, 16-20 is 2 children
For a potential mother aged 24-34: 1-5 is no children, 6-8 is 1 child, 9-14 is 2 children, 15-20 is 3 children
For a potential mother aged 35-45: 1-10 is no children, 11-15 is 1 child, 16-20 is 2 childrenEvents (optional)Roll d10:
1-6: no event
7-8: Fire! Fire!
A great fire burns down one of your finest palaces. If you choose to restore it, it will be at great cost to the taxpayer - but the grandeur will certainly impress any foreign dignitaries (or enemies).
9-10: To The Holy Land
Pope Urban III has proposed another Crusade to reclaim the Holy Land. If you have any men over the age of 16 in the family, roll d3 for each to determine if they go on the Crusade - if you roll a 1, then it’s a yes. For each person on the Crusade, roll d10 - if it’s from 8-10 then unfortunately they’ll never make it back from the Holy Land, and died fighting for the cause.(A note about succession: you can choose to use the system used in the 12th century and beyond, whereby the eldest son of the King succeeded him, or you can choose to make it so the eldest child succeeds, rather than only boys.)NamesBelow are masculine, feminine, and surname namebanks: roll d10 and count along the names until you reach what you rolled.James Gabriel Pascal William Felix Barnaby Theobald Augustine Henry Percival Fabian Piers Johannes Hilary Andreas Quentin Hugo Adam Michael Julian Richard Amaury Lucian Gilbert Elias Adrian Joseph Oliver Maurice Vincent Tobias John Oscar Harold Alewyn Romain Giles Mark Constans Antony Ippolitus Alec Gavin Peter Brian JordanusAmabel Cordelia Aida Maria Isabella Frances Cressida Blanche Avelina Helen Yvonne Theophania Millicent Emma Sibyl Joan Adelaide Ida Matilda Susanna Emily Charlotte Euphemia Cassandra Arabella Thomasina Clare Honora Madeleine Lilian Margaret Amiria Sabeline Jeanne Simona Hosanna Christiana Bethan Emilia Brigette Isolda Barbara Dionisia Merwenna Elaine Phyliss Amica BlanchetteLancaster Mortmain Fitton Mowbray Boleyn Beauchamp Tulles Middleton Port Saint-Clair Tirel Vivers Fitzroy Godart Bourchier Aubert d’Espagne Maminot

His mother and elder brother mourned his death - the king mourned the death of his alliance with France. The Pope has proposed a Crusade to reclaim the Holy Land. As the heir to the crown, Prince Edmund was keen to prove himself by partaking in it, however, he was denied participation, much to his anger. Unbeknownst to him, this was due to his mother's intervention - Queen Lucy knew she couldn't afford to loose another heir. The Queen also hopes to find Edmund a wife as soon as possible - he hasn't expressed any interest in marriage, but the well-being of England is his top priority.

At first he agreed and they engaged in the activities on a regular basis. Margaret continued to press and continued to press as month after month she still didn't get pregnant. It angered her that she couldn't seem to conceive again. After almost a year of this pushing, King Simon had enough. He announced their divorce. He offered Margaret a home on his lands in exchange for the divorce and her continued silence. Her only option, Margaret took the offer. A few months later, she discovered she was pregnant finally. Since Simon refuses anything to do with her, Margaret has raised their youngest daughter alone. Both Princess Katherine and Princess Alice have reached the marriageable age. At twenty-one, whispers have begun that Katherine may not get married at all and Katherine seems content with that. She has always preferred action and adventure over the humble life of a wife and mother. Alice, on the other hand, has romanticized the idea of being a wife and mother. Even though her own parents' marriage fell apart, she has the childish belief that her mother and father will some day come back together as a family.Even though her father has remarried. Joan of Tulles has become Alice's new mother and the two young women, with less than a ten year gap in their ages, have become solid friends. Katherine and Joan, however, have an even closer relationship. The two spend all their free time gallavanting around the castle together. It makes Margaret wonder.

The timing was bittersweet as just five months later, Nina bore a daughter. Cressida was strong and perfect in everyway, she has been doted upon by all who see her. Quickly after, the Queen became pregnant again and to everyone's relief this third child was a son and new heir to the throne. Though small like his brother, Prince Henry has had the best doctors and medicine the times can offer, he is wrapped in cotton wool. The planned marriage between France's Princess and Prince George has now been passed down to his younger brother.A great fire has burnt down one of the finest palaces. Arthur looks to Nina for advice, neither of the young royals want to restore the palace as it would be of great cost to the already struggling commoner, however in the end Arthur is persuaded to rebuild as a show of his strength and money in times of royal hardship with the passing of the young heir."Arthur (31) and Nina (28) with: George (dec), Cressida (4) and Harry (3).

Prince Adam and Princess Aida have been quietly raising their twin boys, Princes Gabriel and Nicolas. They spend most of their time in Spain, where Aida is a trusted member of the Spanish court. Countess Margaret and Count James just welcomed their second son, young Count Wyn, adored by his elder brother, Count Elias. Princess Katherine, to everyone's shock, did not accept engagement to a young Baron at the age of sixteen, and has steadfastly refused further attempts at engagement since that time. The people have mostly given up hope that she will ever marry, but do all agree that she is a very bright girl and that the King benefits from her remaining single and at home.

-S4: [4] Prince Alewyn Romain Gavin
-S5: [2] Prince William Theobald Fabian Ariane and King Alistair were quickly wed after the previous round. Though his birth was not officially announced (the new Queen was declared ill with a fever), little Prince James did not enter the world alive, but stillborn three months early. Agnes, his future bride, also died at the tender age of two years. Still grieving their son’s brief life and death while unable to show it publicly, Ariane and Alistair became pregnant again quickly–to provide another heir, but also one to their new union in order to solidify Ariane’s place as Queen, hoping to further deflect the rumors still swirling about her previous pregnancy and possible unsuitability for the position. A son was born, Alewyn followed shortly after by William. She is now quite popular with the people.
Prince Simon wed a neighboring duchess last year, Aida Blanche Mowbray. They just welcomed their first child, a daughter, named Emma Matilda Arabella (Matilda after Simon’s late mother, and Arabella a subtly respectful nod to the new Queen Ariane). Thankfully they have ample time to produce a son and heir before Simon himself is likely to take the throne.
Duchess Caroline was married to Henry, Duke of Godart three years ago. Last year she produced a son, Hugo and now, eleven months later, a daughter named Simona after her older brother to whom she is close (and it doesn’t hurt to name your firstborn after a future king to garner favor).

Love and LossBy 1180, the excommunications of Baron Glastonbury and Earl & Countess Arundel had been reversed by Pope Alexander III. Sadly, the Pope did not live long after he had received King Philip I & Queen Edith's earnest thanks. Pope Lucius III succeeded him in 1181, and the rumors of Edith's adherence to the "Pelagian Heresy" faded into obscurity, replaced with far more interesting court gossip.Philip and Edith could not enjoy this relief, however. Edith had already given birth to their third son, Prince Percival (who his siblings had taken to calling Percy), and was expecting their sixth child, when little Jamie fell ill with scarlet fever - the same illness that had killed Edith's eldest brother, Geoffrey, for whom her eldest son was named. For months - through the birth of their third daughter, Princess Maria (mah-RIE-uh) - Edith was a shell of her former self, only making the most perfunctory gestures of involvement in affairs of governance and completely removing herself from any revelry. Philip, saddened himself at the loss of his little boy, did not know to reach his wife of 14 years.Meanwhile, Philip's cousin Margaret of Bath had her first child with her husband Maurice Saint-Clair, the wealthy Comte Aubert: a son, Tobias. After some miscarriages, the arrival of this child was celebrated within House Wessex - particularly by Philip's uncle Guy, who was finally a grandfather (Margaret is his only child). Guy introduced the subject of allying newborn Tobias with (also newborn) Maria - but the mere mention of this prompted Edith to toss her wine goblet at him before leaving the room in tears. Philip apologized on her behalf, and Guy told him he understood her grief was still raw; however, Philip couldn't help but suspect that his wife had just made an enemy of his uncle.

There's a lot more to kinging than just sitting around looking important. Richard's father never mentioned anything about sorting out two nobles both claiming their daughters were promised to wed the same scion, or thinking up ways to stop the bakers' ever-evolving tradition of bread fraud. Every day, it seemed, someone had invented new and exciting ways to make his life difficult.Of course, it wasn't always terrible all the time. Tilly, now a full-fledged adult and insistent upon being called Matilda, was wiser and less impatient, though still as hard-headed as a crab wearing a tortoise shell for a helmet. She'd gone and married George, as planned, and then she'd quickly realised domestic life involved a lot less witty reparee and a lot more servant management than she'd expected. She and George had two children before very long: Helen, with eyes the colour of storm-clouds and the voice of a nightingale, and Harry, who always tried to touch Richard's crown whenever his grandfather tried to carry him. They made a happy life for themselves, the four of them. Which was why, when George fell deathly ill, Matilda was inconsolable. She'd spent the entire night sitting at her husband's bedside, distracting him with humorous anecdotes and singing to him, until finally dawn arrived, and George was gone.In the aftermath, Matilda kept her head high, wearing the public mask of the strong, persisting widow, but Richard could tell, from the shadows under her eyes and the hollows on her cheeks, that she felt her loss deeply. Beatrice offered that she took the children and stay in the royal castle for some time, and Matilda accepted swiftly, eager for something to keep her mind off her grief.

You definitely have a sense of humor in your approach to medieval kinging (I'm asking myself what, exactly, "bread fraud" could possibly include). I'm enjoying it!
vote up1
Oh, bread fraud? That, actually, is not my invention.Basically, bread was regulated in terms of size, ingredients, &c, a sensible standardisation considering how it was a staple food during the era. But bakers, being humans and thus just as prone to trickery in pursuit of gain as everyone else, found ways to cheat the rules. They'd done everything from putting sawdust in the flour, using measuring boards with a hole in them where the dough would fall through and thus make the finished bread smaller, all sorts of crazy stuff.Incidentally, this is why we have the baker's dozen. Bakers eager to prove themselves honest gave an extra loaf to the dozen, as a gesture of how definitely not-greedy they are.History, amirite? Sometimes even funnier than what fiction can think up.

-DS2 [8]: Prince Joachim Constantine Nicolas
-DD2 [dec, 5]: Princess Leonor Isabella Maud
-DS3 [3]: Prince Henry Adam Elias 'Hal'
-DS4 [2]: Prince Tobias John Harold 'Toby' England has prospered under the firm but fair rule of Philip, now that taxes have been diverted from the arts to infrastructure and reform. Princess Leonor, unfortunately, caught scarlet fever two years ago. The royal physician did all he could to save her, but after a few days of illness the priest was summoned and the last rites were given. The young princess passed away at the age of five, much to the devastation of all the family, but particularly Constancia, with whom she had been very close. Arthur, Constancia and Joachim are growing up, and have been joined by two younger brothers, Hal and Toby. Arthur is a serious, studious young man, who would rather conquer by the pen than by the sword. He spends hours each day hidden in the royal libraries, reading whatever he can get his hands on. His literary habits have led to him becoming a very articulate, persuasive boy, likely to be excellent at negations and diplomacy, although probably lacking on the battlefield. He's very close with his mother, who enjoys his quiet, intellectual nature.Constancia is vivacious and full of laughter, always up to some mischief. She is the delight of the royal court and has taken well to her lessons in dancing, singing, and embroidery. She had really taken Leonor under her wing, and her death dampened her spirits somewhat for a while. However, she has learned to cope and has enjoyed spending time with Hal and Toby.Joachim is a stark contrast to Arthur. He is loud, boisterous, and athletic, always partaking in some kind of sport.
